We are soliciting papers to fill out a proposal for an RSA panel (or panels) titled: Queen Christina of Sweden: Imprints on History and Historiographic Impressions. Papers submitted must reflect original research and be no longer than 20 minutes. Both PhD candidates in their final year of study and established scholars are encouraged to apply!**
Leading up to Queen Christina of Sweden’s 400th birthday celebrations in 2026, we are organizing a series of talks, events, and projects that aim to highlight and expand new scholarship on Queen Christina and her lasting cultural influence. This session invites new work on Christina and the personal, social, political, artistic, intellectual, and academic networks that she built across 17th century Europe. We are also interested in work that reflects on the almost mythical status Christina holds and papers that consider the volumes of material already published on Christina and her circle, identifying both thematic approaches worth pursuing and more problematic trends which should be re-addressed. What documentary evidence do we have related to Christina and what major questions remain?
Proposals can relate to any aspect of Christina or her influence and can include, but are not limited to:
The state of research; Images of Christina; Archival discoveries; Biographical milestones; Patronage; Objects and spaces related to Christina; Travel and transnational agency; Historiography; Christina as a collector; Christina’s artistic, academic, social, religious, political, or personal relationships; Christina’s writing
